The Role: Engineering Lead / Backend Manager

We are seeking a seasoned Engineering Lead / Backend Manager to set the technical direction of the backend domain and guide multiple Java-focused squads. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll influence architecture, steer technical decisions, mentor teams, and help shape a platform that will become the foundational operating system for the alternatives industry.

Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership & Architecture

• Define and drive the long-term backend architecture and engineering standards across multiple teams.

• Make high-impact decisions regarding scalability, system boundaries, performance, and resilience.

• Guide the evolution of a modern microservices architecture — ensuring consistency, reliability, and observability.

Team Leadership & Delivery

• Provide day-to-day technical leadership to 2–3 backend squads, supporting them in technical decision-making and unblockers.

• Align engineering outputs with product priorities, delivery timelines, and quality standards.

• Drive best practices across squads: testing, documentation, observability, performance optimisation, and incident response.

Cross-Functional Influence

• Act as the main engineering representative in cross-functional discussions, clearly communicating technical decisions and trade-offs.

• Foster strong collaboration with product, design, and wider business stakeholders.

Security & Compliance

• Ensure backend systems are built with security at the forefront — enforcing best practices and compliance with relevant industry standards.

Mentorship & Talent Development

• Coach and mentor engineers to grow both technically and as emerging leaders.

• Shape career development plans, contribute to hiring, and help nurture a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of engineering experience, including deep expertise in microservices and distributed systems.

• Proven leadership experience guiding multiple engineering teams or squads.

• Strong background in Java 21 and Spring Boot within cloud-native environments.

• Hands-on experience with AWS and Kubernetes, including deployment, monitoring, reliability, and cost optimisation.

• Excellent communication skills — able to articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Passion for mentoring, team growth, and driving a culture of engineering excellence.
